Emily In Paris…For Real Girls

Emily In Paris…For Real Girls

Whether you’re a fan or not, there is no denying that Netflix’s global-phenomenon, two-times Golden Globe nominee and one of the most watched shows - Emily in Paris is light-hearted escapism we all need from time-to-time – a classic case of ‘not having to use your brain’ tv.

When the first season dropped in 2020, it was largely derided by critics.  Among some of the most brutal savaging’s was The Guardian’s critique, who gave it a one-star review and described it as “an excruciating exorcism of French cliches”, asking “what the French had done to deserve this”.

But apart from the fact that it is full of French stereotypes, cringe-worthy moments and very sexy men…it also boasts some of the most interesting fashion moments and iconic styling to die for. The fashion is flamboyant, over-the-top, stylish, cute and risqué and I for one am SO here for it.  Parisiennes are known for their timeless and effortless elegance when it comes to daily style, quite the contrast when you think of the fashion choices in Emily in Paris.

When people say to the show’s costume designer, Marylin Fitoussi, that even Emily cannot afford what’s in her closet…she replies with” of course not, nobody can! But do you want to see her in a hoodie and jeans? Nobody wants to see that. It’s for the imagination to see these beautiful items created by brilliant people.”

But how can one dress like Emily in Paris?  Is it realistic, can a real girl pull off the looks? Think of an elevated but playful aesthetic, fusing classic tailoring with geometric shapes and eye-catching colour. As a fan of the show and seeing as Season 4 is still fresh on my mind, I felt Emily adopted more of a mature look with an ode to the French way of dressing.  She still struts through the city in Season 4 in neon colours and ridiculously high heels, but she also opts for trousers and button-down shirts and blazers that speak to a more grown-up audience.

Here are my top tips to embrace an Emily in Paris style based on the latest season:

·      Full-blown colour: Nothing defines Emily’s wardrobe better than bright, full-tonal colour, in particular yellow. One of the earlier looks in the season included a bright high-lighter yellow leather Possery shacket worn over a Joli Closet frilly blouse and an equally bright yellow Isabel Marant corduroy skirt with matching bag and gold accessories.  If you like colour, seek out an all-yellow combination.

·      A bright trouser suit: while tracking down a runaway Camille early in Season 4, Emily wore a bright cobalt-blue matching suit with a Pierre Hardy bag. Demure…with a touch of masculinity.

·      Shorts: Emily is no stranger to wearing shorts to the office.  She was spotted wearing a pair of green leather Manokhi shorts, paired with a printed blouse from La DoubleJ.  This is a great look for brunch or a night out.  If it doesn’t pertain to suitable office wear in your job, you can swap out the shorts for a skirt, finishing off the look with gold earrings and stacking rings.

·      A Baker Boy Cap: or as others like to call them – newsboy caps.  Emily wore the baker boy cap with a massive Isabel Marant teddy coat and over-the-knee Christian Louboutin boots in Season 4.  Que the return of the baker boy cap which I remember being a fashion trend on and off throughout the years.

·      Matching button-up striped shirt and tie:  Emily wore this Sébline set in a café scene with a patterned Miu Miu knitted vest over it, diamond tie-clip and silver rings. A very typical Emily outfit – mixing and matching patterns, colours and textures.

·      A striped co-ord set: as seen on Emily at the tennis, when she was trying to woo Alfie for a kiss.  She wore a striped Tara Jarmon co-ord suit with a matching Panama hat. This is one look which is so easy to replicate and wear on a day-to-day basis.

·      Old Italian glamour: Once Emily flees Paris for Rome, she starts dressing in more of an Italian ‘Roman Holiday’ style – think checkered blazer, drop-waist skirt (with a dose of Dior sunglasses and mini straw YSL bag) plus a practical pair of Mary Jane flats – quite demure for Emily and something we can all get onboard with – a break from those sky-high heels.  In addition, Audrey Hepburn-esque scarves came into play in Rome (hair-ties and neckties) which is something we all have in our wardrobes and can instantly glam-ify an outfit.

·      Burgundy: my love for burgundy has no end and probably one of the most relatable looks from Season 4 plus one which we can all emulate.  Emily wore a burgundy leather jacket with a polo-neck and checkered miniskirt. Perfect for Autumn – don’t forget the matching burgundy lippy to finish the look.
