How Toxic Is Your Toothpaste?

Toothpaste. It’s something we all use every day, morning and night, without much thought. But have you ever stopped to wonder what’s actually inside that tube?


While toothpaste promises fresh breath and sparkling teeth, the ingredients it contains could be doing more harm than good. Not just to your mouth, but to your gut health too. As awareness around holistic health grows, many of us are becoming more conscious of the products we use daily. The connection between oral and gut health is undeniable, and what we put in our mouths can directly impact our digestion, immunity, and even our mood.



So What’s Really in Your Toothpaste?


Toothpaste formulas contain a mix of abrasives, humectants, detergents, sweeteners, flavorings, and preservatives. While these ingredients have specific roles—like removing plaque, preventing dryness, and enhancing taste—not all of them are as safe as they seem. And definitely not for micro dosing, as we do every day twice a day. I want to bring your attention to the most concerning ingredients:


Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

This common foaming agent gives toothpaste that satisfying lather but is known to irritate the mouth and gut lining. It’s been linked to mouth ulcers, and because it's absorbed through the delicate oral tissues, it can contribute to gut inflammation and even leaky gut syndrome.


Titanium Dioxide

Added to make toothpaste look bright and white, but it offers no health benefits and may disrupt the gut microbiome. Some studies suggest it could even have carcinogenic effects.


Artificial Sweeteners (Sorbitol, Saccharin)

These ingredients can upset the delicate balance of gut bacteria, leading to bloating and digestive issues over time.


Triclosan

Once used for its antibacterial properties, triclosan has been linked to hormone disruption and gut flora imbalances.


The gut is home to trillions of bacteria that play a crucial role in digestion, immunity, and overall health. When we expose ourselves to toxic ingredients in toothpaste daily, we may unknowingly disrupt this balance and set the stage for long-term health problems.



The Fluoride Controversy


Fluoride is often hailed as the ultimate cavity fighter, strengthening enamel and preventing tooth decay. However, it’s not without its downsides. Fluoride is a knownneurotoxin and endocrine disruptor, with studies linking excessive exposure to issues like thyroid dysfunction, reduced IQ in children, and gut dysbiosis… would you believe it?


Some communities have even taken steps to remove fluoride from their water supplies due to growing health concerns. Thankfully, there’s a better alternative— Hydroxyapatite, a naturally occurring mineral that makes up our teeth and bones, so why haven’t we considered this before? Hydroxyapatite not only helps remineralize enamel but also does so without the potential health risks associated with fluoride. Plus, it’s safe if swallowed, making it a fantastic option for kids and adults alike and those looking for a non-toxic oral care solution. It also has a natural whitening effect after 5 weeks of use. Be prepared to pay a bit more and you need to make sure you find one with at least 10% Hydroxyapatite.



How Your Oral Health Affects Your Gut


The mouth is the gateway to the gut, and the health of your oral microbiome directly influences your digestive system. Harmful bacteria from the mouth can easily travel to the gut, leading to inflammation and imbalances. If you're using toothpaste filled with harsh chemicals, you might be unknowingly fueling gut issues like bloating, IBS, and nutrient malabsorption.



Here are my top tips to keep both your mouth and gut healthy


1. Choose a Clean Toothpaste: Look for options free from SLS, artificial sweeteners, and harsh preservatives. Hydroxyapatite-based toothpaste is a great alternative and my ultimate favorite for all my patients.


2. Read the Ingredients: If you can’t pronounce it, your body probably doesn’t need it. Stick to natural, recognizable ingredients that support oral health without harming your gut but don’t forget about the remineralizing agent either Hydroxyapatite or Fluoride if that’s your choice.


3. Nourish Your Microbiome: A balanced diet rich in fiber, probiotics, and whole foods will support both oral and gut health. Don’t over complicate it, eat the rainbow, foods from nature.


4. Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing twice daily with an electric toothbrush, flossing/ interdental brushes, tongue scraping and ensure you avoid mouth breathing can help maintain a healthy oral environment without relying on harsh chemicals. Visit your Dental Professionals.
