Today Lucy shares with us her biggest life learnings:
#LIFELESSON – 1 Nurture your relationships
Whether business or personal, your relationships should be purposefully cherished and maintained. I am always amazed when business owners don’t understand the importance of mutually beneficial relationships and effective connection. It’s really not hard to find ways to stay in touch and show your clients and contacts that you care. If you nurture relationships, people will stay loyal to you, especially in difficult times when you need them the most. There is so much noise and competition out there, and someone will always be willing to undercut you price-wise. Don’t underestimate the difference strong relationships make so you can stand out and stay top of mind. Especially as most people don’t bother, it means you’ll even have more impact. Over the years, I have invested a lot of time networking, connecting, and communicating, and it has enabled me to build solid foundations that have withstood changing market conditions.
#LIFELESSON – 2 Be yourself.
And I mean this genuinely, not in the #authentic sense. For a long time, I worried about people’s perceptions, basing my opinions and even some big decisions on what they may or may not think of me. What a mistake! Once I hit my 40’s I stopped letting people’s opinions affect me, and it has made a huge difference in how I feel and the success of my business. I am who I am and I really do own my opinions. Authentic has become a buzzword used by people who are usually the opposite in reality. Being true to yourself can be tough and it feels uncomfortable at first. However, I found when I started being more vocal about what I really thought and believed in on platforms like LinkedIn, other business owners and clients were more supportive. They applauded my honestly, and it has become one of my core values. When people say they know where they are with me, it’s a huge compliment.
#LIFELESSON – 3 Never let age (or anything else) stop you from trying something new.
For me, this was starting to learn ballet at age 47. Now two years on, I am totally devoted to it and en pointe four times a week. I perform in shows and am part of a Russian ballet school. Practicing ballet has taught me so much about dedication and progress; it has also been a massive game-changer for my mental and physical health. Ballet constantly challenges me and frustrates me at times, but I have always wanted to carry on and see what I can achieve with it next. It’s never too late to find a new hobby or develop a new talent. Just because we live in an ageist society doesn’t mean we need to operate within those limits. It’s even more of a reason to work hard to succeed at something that ordinarily most people wouldn’t do. The feeling of satisfaction you get from mastering a new skill is truly special.
