Raemona Roundup // Escape Dubai For The Weekend

The Weekender

If you’re anything like us, there are moments when city life feels a bit overwhelming, and all we crave is a quiet beach without a skyscraper in sight or a dose of fresh air to reset!

Today Hannah Orchard from Paper Plane has rounded up a few favourite spots to recharge - and the best part? No flights are required!

// Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman

If the thought of navigating an airport with suitcases and kids in tow feels more of a chore than a holiday, Six Senses Zighy Bay could be the perfect option to consider for a long weekend break. Equally, if you are a couple looking for some serious R&R, it ticks all the right boxes.

The journey to Zighy Bay is all part of its charm. A scenic two-hour drive from Dubai winds through dramatic mountain landscapes before descending into the secluded bay. Just don’t forget your passport (and visa, if needed)! And if you’re a little more adventurous, paragliding down to the resort is a must – the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Nestled on the Musandam Peninsula, this isn't your glossy, overly polished resort. It's the original Six Senses charm: warm, colourful interiors and a nod to traditional Omani design, offering a true sense of place.

For couples, I always recommend taking one of the Beachfront Villas which have direct beach access and plenty of privacy. For families, two-bedroom villas are perfectly suited and give you  space both inside and out. Or, for the ultimate group getaway, whether it's with family or friends, the Private Reserve offers four spacious bedrooms and all the amenities to ensure it's a stay to remember!

As with any Six Senses property, wellness takes centre stage. The spa feels like a real sanctuary (you can very easily while away long afternoons here), offering all kinds of treatments from Ayurvedic therapies to experiences like the 24K Gold Age-Defying Facial, which is guaranteed to leave you glowing!

Your stay at Zighy can be tailored to you, thanks to your dedicated GEM (guest experience manager). Whether it's sunrise yoga, a day at sea on a traditional Omani boat, or private dining experience nothing is too much of an ask. Families are well looked after too, the complimentary ice cream room is always a winner, as is the Cinema Paradiso - Zighy's outdoor movie nights under the stars.

// Bab Al Shams

If you're short on time but still want to make the most of a quick getaway, Bab Al Shams is always my top recommendation. Just a 45-minute drive from the city, it's incredibly convenient, and with no minimum night stay, you can pop in for just one night and still leave feeling refreshed. Even the shortest stay has a way of filling up your cup, ready for a return to 'real life' on a Monday morning.

The resort re-opened in 2024 following an extensive refurbishment. I love the design of the property, which blends moorish-inspired interiors with modern design. You'll find cosy nooks, beautiful open courtyards and plenty of Instagram-worthy corners.

If budget allows, opt for one of the property's new villas - complete with Private pool, firepit and terrace making them perfect for a more secluded escape. But if your plan is to camp out by the main pool all day (and why wouldn't it be?), a Deluxe Desert Room is just as lovely and ideal for a more relaxed stay.

The dining options are another highlight and will leave you feeling spoiled for choice. Ninive, an export from downtown Dubai, is a must-try. Their Middle Eastern and North African cuisine is delicious and the setting is beautiful. Pre-dinner, make sure to head up to the rooftop bar for a drink at sunset - the whole place glows golden!

Warm and welcoming, Bab Al Shams has such a lovely laid-back energy. Whether you head there as a couple, with friends or with family, it is an easy escape that still feels special.

Naama Beach Villas & Spa, Fujairah

For a peaceful escape that feels like you're hidden away from the world, Naama Beach Villas & Spa would be my go-to. This all-villa retreat is located on the serene shores of Fujairah, offers the perfect getaway just under two hours' drive from Dubai. The property, a sister to Vakkaru (one of my absolute favourite islands in the Maldives), provides the same tranquil vibe, but with the added bonus of being so close to home.

Whether you choose a one, two or four-bedroom villa, you'll fall for the dreamy interiors - think muted tones and minimalist design, and the private pools make it incredibly hard to leave the villa (in the best possible way). Each villa offers such peace and privacy, you'll feel like you're in your own little world.

From the moment you arrive, a dedicated butler is assigned to you to ensure your every need is taken care of. Whether it's arranging an in-villa dining experience (yes, dinner in your dressing gown is very much encouraged!) or booking an afternoon of relaxation at the Merana Spa, nothing is too much trouble. The hammam experience at the spa is an absolute must—trust me, you’ll feel like you’re floating after any treatment, completely refreshed and rejuvenated.

If after a couple of days of total relaxation you feel like moving, there's no shortage of activities to keep you busy. You can head to the gym, enjoy a game of padel, or ask the team to organise a scenic hike so you can explore the local landscape.

After a couple of nights here, you'll return to the city feeling completely recharged! and ready to take on the world (and the Dubai traffic!).
