The Autumn/Winter 2024 Trends You Need to Know About

Autumn, Fall, Pumpkin Spice Latte season…whatever you prefer to call it, there is no denying that for many, including myself, this is the season where fashion excels, where there is immense excitement and intrigue over what’s new in the shops and what are we all lusting over and going to be wearing.

No other season makes me happy when it comes to fashion like Autumn does.  I revel in the colours, the textures and the layers.  To quote Richard Gilmore from the Gilmore Girls – “I…am an Autumn”.

So, without further ado, let’s delve into this seasons MUST-HAVES and what you will be seeing EVERYWHERE online and in stores.

·      Burgundy

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have noticed that burgundy is literally everywhere now. Burgundy – also known as oxblood or maroon is undoubtedly THE colour of the season.  Thanks to a wave of deep burgundy dresses and accessories that flooded the catwalks from Ferragamo to Saint Laurent, the colour hue just adds an expensive air to any look whether you opt for a full burgundy outfit or just a pop of the shade with a bag or shoe.

·      Leopard Print

I personally would consider leopard print a neutral.  It’s a fashion mainstay.  It comes and goes out of fashion quite frequently but never dates.  You can pair it with most other neutral colours including black, brown, cream and dark beige and equally it looks fabulous with pops of red and pink. If top to toe leopard print is too daunting to try, experiment with accessories instead to inject some spotty wild cat into your wardrobe.

·      Boho Chic

If you think boho is exclusively for summer holidays and boho season – think again.  Case in point – the Chloé AW24 catwalk show where the FROW including boho queen Sienna Miller, were all decked out in the brand’s Maxime wedge sandals with a 1970’s influence taking center stage down the runway. For Autumn think long floaty boho style dresses with ruffles and frills teamed with brown suede (or burgundy) knee-high boots.

·      Waist Belts

Of all the Y2K trends to make a comeback, waist belts are the latest and possibly the easiest to incorporate into your day-to-day wardrobe.   This season, your belts will be doing far more than just holding up your trousers - cinching in that waist is where it’s all at.

·      The Classic Pump

The ‘office’ was at the forefront at Dries Van Noten, Tory Burch and Toteme, who all decided to modernize the classic work pump.  For Autumn/Winter 2024, they made the traditional three-inch stiletto look cool and fashion-forward by tightening the vamp and reimagining the heel – resulting in a more polished look.

·      County-core

Coined by Pinterest, ‘eclectic grandpa’ made waves at the start of the year when it was named one of the platform’s trend predictions for 2024.  From tweeds, corduroy, and plaid prints to waxed barn jackets, capes and cable-knit oversized jumpers -imagine your wardrobe perfectly suited to an English countryside house for the weekend.

·      Barrel-Leg Jeans

Barrel-Leg jeans are officially the denim shape of the season.  Usually high-waisted, barrel-leg jeans are notable for their extreme tapered leg.  Coming in all different shades and washes, their slim ankle and baggy knee seem to be the perfect combination of relaxed and sleek at the same time.  According to Citizens of Humanity – (the brand that birthed the trend) – retailers have bought heavily into the horseshoe style for AW24 with everyone from Cos to Marks & Spencer introducing their barrel-leg player into the arena.  I personally love the style – (I got a fabulous pair from M&S) as it’s so flattering on the leg especially where the hemline hits the ankle making them ideal to wear with flats, flip flops and trainers.

·      Liquid Leather

Faux leather always makes an appearance in some form every Autumn/Winter season.  And whilst you will currently see this timeless material in its truest form in most retailers online and in-stores, glossy leather has emerged as the key material this season in shirts, skirts, dresses, coats, trousers and jackets in shades from olive green and burgundy to tan and chocolate brown.

·      Suede

Suede – in particular jackets and bags in this awesome, luxurious material are back on our radar.  When it comes to investment pieces, a suede jacket is a very good purchase, especially a vintage one (which are normally great quality).  With a multitude of fashion designers showcasing the iconic jacket during their respective Fashion Weeks, the street-style set was quick to take note and several show-goers at Copenhagen Fashion Week were spotted layering suede outerwear with summer dresses, oversized shirts and sheer skirts. To add, suede also goes hand-in-hand with the boho chic aesthetic.
